Two-Channel Audio is Still Going Strong…but Why?

Two-Channel Audio is Still Going Strong…but Why?

Get Back to Basics With Two-Channel Audio

Did you know that in 1934, Alan Blumlein recorded one of the earliest stereo albums at the world-famous Abbey Road recording studio in London?

And in 1969, the Beatles recorded their final studio album in the same exact place. Also in stereo.

In 35 years, not much had changed about the technology. Both sessions were done as two-channel audio recordings.

Today, musicians still record in two-channels. Why?

In this blog, we’ll try to answer that question. And we’ll also show you why a two-channel set up may be perfect for your Haddonfield, NJ listening room. All you have to do is keep reading.

Why Two-Channel?

A two-channel setup may be the classic stereo configuration, but it doesn’t have to be.

In fact, you can add as many channels as you want.

But for some reason, two-channels are generally regarded as optimal conditions for most music. Here’s why:

Why two instead of one?

If you listen to one speaker, you’ll only hear it from one direction. If you have two, you can hear depth and detail. Two speakers can make it seem as though someone is performing just for you.

Why not more speakers?

If two speakers add detail, won’t four add even more? The answer is yes and no. You’ll probably hear more detail, but your brain will only intemperate it through two ears. So it won’t improve the sound much.

Does position matter?

The positioning of your two-channel speaker system is essential. Two properly placed and calibrated units provide optimal sound staging, so your music sounds as good as possible.

Does the room affect it?

No matter what setup you have, the conditions of the room will play a big part in how your system sounds. If you want to enjoy optimal quality, you’ll need a dedicated listening room.

Where to Start With Two-Channel Audio

Building an audio system can get complicated. But not if you know where to start.

Perhaps the best place to start is with your speakers. Obvious, right?

Well you’re going to be spending a lot of time with them, so you need to pick ones that sound great to you.

And don’t count on them to sound exactly the same way they do in the showroom. Speakers are highly affected by the conditions of the room they’re in.

The best way to choose the right speakers with by testing a variety in your listening room.
