Why a Dolby Atmos Setup Is Perfect for Your Home Media Room

Why a Dolby Atmos Setup Is Perfect for Your Home Media Room

Achieve Better Sound in Your Main Line, PA Entertainment Space

Your sound system is extremely important to your home media room. The right setup can transform your space from bland to grand, simply by immersing you in the audio of your favorite movies, music artists, and sports. And one of the most popular technologies in surround sound technology today is Dolby Atmos. What makes Atmos so special? In this blog, we’ll break it down for you. Read on to learn more.

What Is Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is an immersive audio surround sound codec that helps you feel like you’re in the center of the action of any content you’re watching. Starting with a typical surround sound system configuration-- which features speakers in front of and behind you--an Atmos setup also features two or more overhead units. The additional units help create a sphere of sound around the listener for a fuller effect than your average surround sound.

But Atmos is about more than adding speakers – the codec inherent to Atmos-capable devices translates the audio into individual “audio objects,” which can then move fluidly around each speaker. Conversely, in a traditional surround sound system, each sound is assigned to a specific speaker, or “channel.” The freedom to move between channels allows Atmos to sound more realistic and immersive, and it’s often referred to as a 3D audio.

Why Is Atmos Perfect for Your Media Room?

The truth is, you’ve probably heard Dolby Atmos before and you may not even know it. Many commercial movie theaters have used the technology for years and it’s currently becoming more and more popular as part of private cinemas and media rooms. But how can you fit a huge commercial surround sound system into your home?

That’s the beauty of Atmos – you don’t need to have 60 channels to achieve the full, immersive experience. Atmos configurations can sound effective with setups as small as 5.1.2. That’s five standard speaker, two overhead or up-firing units and one sub.

Atmos uses the natural reflections of your space to sound bigger than it is. That’s why it doesn’t require too many channels. Depending on the size and shape of your media room, you may get away with a smaller configuration without sacrificing the immersive experience.
