BRAVAS Atlanta Sponsors Classical Architecture and Art Event
BRAVAS Atlanta was recently honored to be a sponsor for an event held by the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICA&A), held at the historic Druid Hills Country Club in Atlanta.
The subject that evening was Edward Emmett Dougherty - Atlanta's Beaux-Arts Architect That Got Away. Dougherty, born in Atlanta, was a graduate of the University of Georgia, Cornell University, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which at that time was the leading architecture school in the world.
THE ATLANTA YEARS
Upon graduation, he returned to Atlanta and was involved in the design of what have become several iconic or important buildings in the city. Perhaps most ironically, one of these was the location for this event, the Druid Hills Country Club completed in 1914 where he was one of the original members. He was also responsible for the design of many of the original residences in Druid Hills, the Druid Hills Baptist Church, and other buildings throughout the city which showcased his design aesthetic of the Beaux-Arts school of architecture.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
In 1916 he moved to Nashville where he received numerous commissions and in 1922 completed his most famous design, the Tennessee War Memorial on Nashville's Memorial square. Dougherty won both Tennessee and national design competitions for the building. Three years later he received the Gold Medal Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the highest award that the AIA can bestow. While he left a lasting impression with his work in his native city of Atlanta and is considered Atlanta's true beaux-arts architect. It was in Nashville that he achieved his greatest professional achievements.
