What are Dual Roller Shades?
In a previous blog, we discussed openness factors when it comes to shade fabrics. But what should you do if you have a room that could use multiple fabrics in one application? Read on to find out how you can have the best of both worlds when it comes to shade fabrics.
The Best of Both Worlds
The primary reason window coverings exist is to control the amount of light that enters a window, and automated shades are one of the easiest ways to do so. However, some rooms can use both the ability to filter light and to truly black it out.
With dual roller shades, you can have beautiful light-filtering fabric as well as room-darkening fabric in one shade. This is a great design choice for main bedrooms, allowing you to use the room during the day, but still provide a pitch black space at night. This is especially useful for someone who may work nights and need to sleep during the day, or anyone who uses their room as a “retreat” and not just a space to sleep.
The diagram below shows how each roller tube is mounted and aligned to allow the homeowner to change between light filtering and room darkening.

Planning Ahead
Since dual roller configurations need to allow space for the diameter of not just one, but two rollers to fit into one shade pocket, it is important to plan for the shades when designing the home. The dual roller shade pocket is wider than a standard wall, so BRAVAS works with architects to ensure the walls are designed around the shade pocket.
While it's not impossible to retrofit a dual roller shade, your design options will be very limited, and the aesthetic may not be what you had in mind.
