Drone On

All the way back in 1907, a quadcopter was the first rotary wing aircraft ever to get off the ground. Since then, the design was largely put on the back shelf for larger format rotorcrafts but has found a renaissance in the field of small-scale drones. The simple four-rotor design creates a perfectly stable hover while providing more reliable maneuverability. Since each blade can be controlled separately, quadcopters provide their users with a unique level of control. Altering the velocity of the rotors independently allows the driver to create the desired thrust and direction rather simply--with a little practice. Whether you’re an amateur aviator practicing your aerial assaults, or looking to capture stellar visual imagery from above, quadcopters are the perfect solution to achieve either. Read on to learn about three DJI quadcopter models that may be right for you and your budget.

DJI creates the industry standard in quadcopters and in-flight photography and videography. Their machines provide the user with impeccable control and maneuverability, as well as some of the highest quality cameras, some capable of lossless 4K video. We will examine three DJI quadcopter options at the $500, $1000, and $2000 price points:

DJI Phantom 3 Standard: ($499)

The Phantom 3 is a great place to begin your quadcopter obsession. It comes with an integrated camera that takes 2.7K HD video and 12 Megapixel photos. For those most interested in imagery, you can also upgrade to a 4K camera. Either way, the gimbal stabilization technology makes sure that those pictures remain crisp, however many flips you perform. While you are controlling the Phantom, you can stream live footage to your phone. The battery should last for up to 25 minutes of fly time. As far as flying goes, the Phantom comes equipped with an intelligent flight system that will help a drone student stay in the air. If you’re already a quadcopter enthusiast, perhaps it’s time to take a step up with the Mavic Pro.

DJI Mavic Pro ($999)

The Mavic Pro has been taking the drone world by storm. It has eclipsed its market peers and found itself in a league of its own. The most noticeable differences are its size and weight: the Mavic Pro can fold up to about the size of a water bottle and weighs only 1.62 pounds, making for easy transport. Yet, this should not indicate any weakness; the Mavic beats most of its competitors in its range of control (4.3 miles), flight time (27 min), and obstacle avoidance. It can reach speeds of 40 mph, while producing 4K video. You can stream the live video on your phone, as well as see its location via GPS. In this case, good things do come in small packages. However, perhaps you are planning a professional photography project, then you may be looking for something more like the Inspire 1 V2.0.

DJI Inspire 1 V2.0 ($1.999)

For more serious projects, you may want to consider the Inspire 1 V2.0. If your interest in video and photography goes beyond hobby, this camera is perfect for more professional projects. The Inspire 1 V2.0 includes a professional-level 4K camera with a 3-axis stabilization gimbal for the best quality picture. You can also easily adjust the camera angle or settings and edit the video using an app. Concerning the flight, the 2.0 model has been revamped with superior propellers that will last longer and provide a smoother ride. You will also experience a much greater sense of control with improved motor performance. Lose none of the fun, but add a new level of quality with the Inspire 1 V2.0.

Each of these models is united in at least one way: they are all very cool. You have the opportunity to build your own flying contraption and fulfill that childhood airplane fantasy in a respectable way. If you’re looking for a fun new hobby or want to take professional level photographs or video for an event, there is a DJI model for you. Customizations options are also available on most models.
