The Shifting Landscape of Landscape Audio
Spending a Dallas summer evening with your family in the backyard is a great vignette of the American dream. Add a BBQ grill and music that makes you dance and the picture is complete. In most homes that music is coming from a bluetooth speaker or possibly a pair of speakers on the patio, which is less than ideal. The preferred solution is what is commonly known as “landscape audio” and below you will find the best options for getting music into your entire yard.
Sonance Landscape Audio
Sonance was early to the landscape audio game, and currently has three “satellite and sub” options to hit any price point. Satellite and sub systems utilize many small speakers that resemble landscape lights to spread sound evenly throughout a space. They are aimed back towards the home to minimize worries of being a bad neighbor, and to focus sound exactly where it is desired. To provide full-range sound a subwoofer is partially buried in the ground, minimizing visual impact. Sonance starts with their entry-level system called Sonarray, and goes all the way up to a system called SLS. SLS is perfect for large yards, estates and even hotel grounds. In the middle is the Garden Series, a good fit for most suburban yards.
Origin Acoustics Bollards
Some spaces aren’t laid out well for a satellite and sub audio system. For those we prefer a great option is a bollard speaker. Bollard speakers could be considered the significant update to the old-fashioned rock speaker. The aluminum housings look more like artwork than speakers, and come in multiple finishes to match any yard. The Origin Acoustics bollard speakers are also available in 180º and 360º dispersion patterns to fit in any space, and include a subwoofer in the base leaving only the sleek aluminum towers visible.
Coastal Source Bollards
If you are lucky enough to have a very large yard, or understanding neighbors, you can have theater-quality and rock-concert sound in your own yard. For that, Coastal Source has their own bollard speakers, and it is impressive. The Coastal Source Ellipse 10.0 Bollard stands nearly four feet high, and is one of the most powerful sounding speakers I have heard outdoors. Their new 12.0 Bollard speaker features a line-array speaker arrangement, similar to what you would see hanging overhead at a concert. The size might be imposing in a small yard, but in a large yard or estate the scale is perfect. If you are looking for the ultimate in outdoor entertaining, don’t overlook Coastal Source landscape audio.
