THE ABSOLUTE BASICS
Let’s start with defining what “high-end audio” means. In short, it means that your audio system produces sound that is as close as possible to the original recording. Whether you’re talking about the latest pop hit, a symphonic recording or a podcast, you want to know that you’re hearing is what you would’ve heard if you were in the room as it was happening.
If you’ve set up your system correctly, the result will be balanced, rich sound no matter what you’re listening to. Bass notes should be distinct, and you should be able to pick out individual instruments in the mix. Treble elements should be smooth and clear, without any nails-on-a-chalkboard sensations when the high notes kick in. Lastly, instruments or voices in the mid-range should be easily identifiable, not just a wall of noise.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT COMPONENTS
The key to enjoying high-end audio lies in selecting the right equipment. As is often the case in life, you get what you pay for, and sub-par components will produce muddy, muffled sound.
The two crucial parts of your audio system are your speakers and your receiver. When selecting speakers, what you’re looking for is that balanced sound we discussed above.
As for your receiver, you first want to have a firm sense of what your audio needs are and the space in which you’ll be setting up your system. If you’re setting up a system in a smaller room or a space where you’ll primarily be listening to music, a stereo receiver will likely do the trick, but you’ll want an A/V receiver if you’re installing a system for your home theater or media room.
A/V receivers allow for surround sound capability and can handle a greater number of inputs. Once you’ve settled on what kind of receiver you want, you want to be sure it can handle the number of inputs you want and that it generates enough power for all your devices.
OTHER TIPS AND TRICKS
There are a few other things to keep in mind when setting up an audio system. If you’re going with a wireless system, you want to be sure your home network is strong enough to keep all your devices talking to each other. We also highly recommend you go with a professional installation, as many of these components require careful setup and calibration to get the optimal result.
