Smart Home Technology: The Perfect Accent for Marie Flanigan's Dream Home
Our affiliate out of Houston recently teamed up with award-winning interior designer, Marie Flanigan, to incorporate smart home technology into her personal dream home, which was recently featured in Architectural Digest.
Working with an exceptional designer on their own home is always a thrill, and this was no exception. Marie’s style is incredible, but the thoughtfulness with which every decision was considered forced us to do the same when it came to her technology.
The most significant piece of this project for BRAVAS was the Lutron motorized shades. Every window covering in the home was a handmade fabric from Hartmann and Forbes, and in most of those windows we used Lutron’s roller shade hardware to motorize and automate those beautiful fabrics, providing convenience, comfort and privacy. According to Marie, “Windows were one of my biggest investments in the home, and I knew it would take a special partner to help me harness the natural light that I desired.”

To accentuate and not distract from Marie’s incredible design, we focused on products that were both functional and beautiful. Instead of large ceiling speakers, we chose James Small Aperture speakers designed to match the architectural lighting, providing a clean and uncluttered ceiling. To avoid banks of plastic light switches we specified Lutron Alisse keypads in an aged brass finish. The Alisse keypads add a European sophistication to the space with the warmth of real brass and a timeless design, while also removing undesirable clutter from the walls.

To control all of this we used a Savant smart home system. In conjunction with an enterprise-grade network to handle Wi-Fi duties, this system allows Marie and her family to seamlessly control lighting, shading, entertainment, comfort, security, and surveillance. Everything is in one place and can be controlled from inside the home or from anywhere in the world. In Marie’s own words, “I knew my home would be a very large install with lots of details; however, I felt incredibly confident in Kevin and the BRAVAS team.”
The project was a success and showcased how smart home technology can be tastefully integrated into the home without compromising design. To learn more about this project, you can read Marie Flanigan's case study on our featured work page.
