GO 4K AND GO BIG

HD displays with 1080p resolution have been top of the line for a long time now, but that’s changed with the broader variety of 4K UHD content now available. 4K Ultra UD displays contain four times the number of pixels as regular HD displays. A greater number of pixels means you get images that are much sharper, brighter and have more contrast than traditional HD displays allow.

Newer 4K displays also have exciting features like high-dynamic range imaging and refresh rates up to 240 Hz (meaning the on-screen image updates itself 240 times per second). HDR allows for a broader range of colors on screen, while faster refresh rates mean less motion blur, making 4K TVs ideal for watching the big game.

Lastly, you want to make sure your display is big enough that viewers in the back of the room aren’t missing any details, but you don’t want to go overboard. A good rule of thumb: The distance between the screen and the viewer should be about 1.5 to 3 times the size of the screen.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SOUND

While no one will dispute that the most important part of your home theater, getting quality sound also matters. This means installing a surround sound system.

A good baseline for surround sound systems is what’s referred to as a 5.1 speaker setup, meaning you have five speakers corresponding to five audio channels and one subwoofer. By placing speakers in front of you, to the side, behind you or even in your ceiling, you create a 3-D listening environment, making your viewing experience that much more immersive. You can always add additional speakers to enhance the dimensions of your soundscape.

TAKE AN INTEGRATED APPROACH

Smart home automation technology isn’t just for your home theater, it’s meant for your whole house. Accordingly, you want the components in your home theater to be connected to any other automation systems you have already installed to create a seamless integration.

Two easy places to start: Whole-home audio and lighting control. Combining lighting control with your home theater allows you to turn on your TV and speakers while also dimming the lights from one device, all with one button press. Never has it been easier to get ready to watch your favorite shows with friends and family.
