3 Big Home Theater Design Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Don’t Compromise on Design or Quality in Your Theater

Nobody likes to make mistakes, and when it comes to designing and installing home theaters, it’s best to do it right the first time. Over the years as we have created and upgraded beautifully themed, high-performance theaters throughout the Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas area, we've seen it all. In our experience, there are three key mistakes that often occur during the home theater design process. If you want the best quality and most immersive experience possible in your home theater, it’s best to avoid these three things.

1. Not Choosing a Theme

What’s the difference between a dedicated home theater and a room where you just happen to watch movies? If your home theater doesn’t have a clear theme, you might not see much difference at all. That’s because the décor and ambiance in your theater define the space.

You don’t have to choose an elaborate theme or go all out with a home theater design based on your favorite TV show or movie, but having a theme is an excellent way to tie all of the home theater components together. It’s all about creating a cohesive, fully immersive experience whenever you want to enjoy your movies.

So how do you avoid this mistake? Work with your home theater designer to find the theme that fits with your personality and lifestyle! Decide early on so that the theme can be incorporated into every aspect of the room,

2. Focusing Only on Design, Not Performance

On the other side of the spectrum, you might be focusing too much on the home theater design if that focus leads to poor audio or video performance. Keep in mind that the main goal of your home theater is to create the perfect environment for enjoying movies, and any décor that detracts from the room’s acoustics will hinder that goal.

If the theater is not installed by a skilled professional, you could end up with decorative items that negatively affect the room’s acoustics or muffle in-wall speakers. It’s also common for lighting and décor to distract from the screen’s visuals.

3. Doing the Design Last

So how do you get the best artwork, lighting, and décor for your theater without compromising on AV performance? You start the design process during the installation, not after. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until the speakers are installed, the projector and screen optimized, and the seating carefully arranged before you start thinking about what themed elements you want in the space.

Instead, have the interior designers and home theater experts work together from the start. We can develop plans that achieve the best of both worlds: a theater that looks and sounds amazing.
